Familiars are helpful creatures that follow you on your adventures. The more fights you win with a particular familiar the more weight he gains, and the more helpful he becomes. The maximum weight is 20lbs, which is reached after 400 fights. The actual formula is fights=weight^2, meaning that a 3 pound familiar will have been present at 9 or more wins, but less than 16.

Your familiars can also gain up to 5 XP/adventure at the Cake-Shaped Arena on the Plains by fighting the House Familiars there. Every 10 wins at the arena will also give you a piece of familiar equipment. In addition to the ones listed by each species, there's a lead necklace that can be worn by any familiar and makes it gain 3lbs.
